Water Writes, Stone Remembers presents artist Hu Yikuan’s creative response to his cave exploration experiences in Guizhou Province. As the second artist-in-residence at Changshi Space, Hu takes the slow and gradual interaction between water and stone as the foundation of his practice, transforming the process of cave formation into a visual language through painting.
The exhibition explores how water penetrates, remains within, and gradually transforms layers of rock over extended periods of time. Through repeated layering, erasing, and dilution of pigments, the artist recreates this slow process of formation, allowing the paintings to reveal a sense of moisture, accumulation, and continuous transformation. In these works, the cave is no longer simply a natural landscape, but an internal space connected to the body, time, and perception. Water, stone, shadows, and traces continuously transform into one another, inviting viewers into a reflection on material memory and inner experience.
