Round Squares
2014
While blowing soap bubbles in the air, Iris van Daalen and Ruben Their came up with the idea to capture these temporary beauties in a tendril frame. The fascinating effect of a floating bubble which adapts to its surrounding until it snapswas the inspiration for a new series of objects in glass combined with wood.
For the Round Squares series, round bubbles of glass were blown into a square wooden frame, uniting two ancient handcrafts; free glassblowing and fine woodworking. The designers were fascinated by the two different materials that have their own unique properties and treatments. Wet wood is commonly used as a mould in free hand glassblowing, but not as a definitive part of the final object. The designers saw this as a beautiful element to apply. The glass marks the wood forever udring the blowing process, making the wooden mould and the glass glass match perfectly together.

Iris van Daalen and Ruben Thier both graduated in 2010, yet from different programs at the Design Academy Eindhoven. Thier works more at the technical side of design where feasibility and the knowledge of material are important. Van Daalen is more about intuition, form and color. Together, they share a fascination for colors, structures and the transience of nature.
Studio Thier & Van Daalen create objects that have a relationship with their environment. Through a clear play of color, light and reflection, sleek and transparent designs arise. Both aesthetics and usability are important starting points, a challenge which seems impossible. The duo loves to work with traditional crafts, which they apply in a contemporary, unique way.
