ABOUT EXHIBITION
The 2023 Shanghai Museum of Glass’s “Annealing” project is set to present audiences with the works of Song Dong and Yin Xiuzhen. This exhibition marks the first time that Song Dong and Yin Xiuzhen have utilized glass as the primary medium for creation, delving further into the philosophical and social implications embedded within the material. In addition, the artistic family trio – Song Dong, Yin Xiuzhen, and their child Song Errui – will once again collaborate, presenting the joint exhibition project titled ‘Way of Chopsticks: Tasting Light.’
Song Dong’s solo exhibition, ‘To Be Or Not To Be,’ revolves around the concept of annealing, prompting a reconsideration of the relationship between “annealing”/”not annealing” and the notions of “cause” and “effect.” Within the indoor exhibition space, four sets of works titled ‘Ignorance,’ ‘Limitless,’ and ‘Desireless’ delve deeply into an exploration and expression of the spirituality inherent in glass. The pieces ‘Cause’ and ‘Effect’ are interconnected, transforming into one another, forming an endless cycle without conclusion. The outdoor neon installation ‘To Be Or Not To Be’ distills “text” into “image,” generating various meanings and ambiguous expressions through differing flash rhythms, thereby offering viewers the possibility for reinterpretation and recreation.
The outdoor work ‘Traceless’ employs the concept of the “screen wall” from traditional Chinese architecture, encouraging visitors to engage by freely painting with water-dipped brushes on sandblasted glass, turning it into a platform that absorbs nature and harnesses the creative energy of the public.
