ABOUT EXHIBITION
Supported by the Chance Art Foundation, the Shanghai Museum of Glass is proud to present The Dreaming Mirror, a solo exhibition by artist Chen Zhou, opening on September 26, 2025. The exhibition grew out of Chen’s residency earlier this year in Yunshantun, Guizhou, invited by the Foundation. In the depths of a mountain cave, he extinguished all light sources, experiencing a moment where darkness and silence coexisted. The cave, like an ancient allegory, prompted a fundamental reflection on “existence and consciousness.” This silent, lightless encounter became a vital starting point for the creation of The Dreaming Mirror.
In the exhibition, embodied experience, painting, and installation resonate with one another, weaving together light, shadow, space, and awareness. Dreams and mirrors are conceived as dual metaphors. In dreams, the subject often shifts: sometimes the self of waking life, sometimes a stranger, sometimes an observer in the void, or even a more abstract presence. The mirror, while affirming the self, simultaneously invokes its negation. Through an integration of installation, sound, and environment, Chen Zhou constructs an ambiguous threshold between truth and illusion, guiding viewers into a dreamlike state where mirror and self, illusion and reality, intertwine—eliciting a persistent, unutterable sense of doubt.
The exhibition also benefits from two key collaborators. Film sound designer Li Zhe shapes an immersive, layered auditory landscape, while architect Pan Jiawei reinforces the audience’s journey through distinctive spatial design, giving narrative continuity to the transitions between works.
ABOUT ARTIST

Chen Zhou,
born in 1987 in Zhejiang, China, is currently based in Shanghai. He primarily works with painting, video, and performance art, focusing on the human experience of existence. In his early works, mainly in video, he explored the absurdity of contemporary life, the performative and deceptive aspects of identity, and the loneliness and alienation within virtual worlds. Since the pandemic, he has increasingly focused on painting and performance. His long-term studies of Buddhist philosophy have gradually influenced his work, giving it an inner spiritual force, a tranquil aura, and an Oriental surrealist style. In this phase, Chen has begun to explore the relationships between the body, space, perception, spirit, and energy.
