Give Each Kid A Chance

Museums are important socio-cultural institutions, and in addition to carrying out its basic function and responsibilities in exhibiting, educating, and collecting, SHMOG is also duty-bound to devote its attention to social groups and fulfill its social responsibility. Over the past five years, SHMOG has strived to give a little love to people with dreams in their hearts. We teamed up with Shanghai NGO Baby Home, calling on the public to show concern for sick, disabled children in need of operations. Together with the Shanghai Sheng Li Foundation, we also held the Live Glass Heart, a charity event devoted to children’s spiritual growth that focused on students who are the children of migrant workers in Shanghai. We’ve put a lot of support behind the Love Science Alliance, throwing open the doors of science to the large amount of people who give blood for free. And we’ve also focused on the living conditions of young students, working with the Quest charity and using an art auction to provide the funds for poor art students to study abroad. Our hope is that everyone will be able to make their own beautiful dreams a reality in the museum. If, like tributaries, each little dream combines to make a river, then the result will be a vision and happiness that are even more far-reaching and magnificent.

Childhood is, naturally, the best age for dreaming. To a greater or lesser extent, all of us have many spiritual sparks within our hearts. The Kids Design Class event is specifically created to turn children’s pure thought and angelic writings into a reality, bringing the sparks in their hearts alive. Among the thousands of paintings we received for the opening ceremony of the Kids Design Glass event, we were surprised to find pictures from autistic children around China. These paintings taught us more about the circumstances of autistic children and the dreams of these special children. Though they usually look no different from other children, these little angels are incapable of doing even the most basic everyday tasks by themselves. They’re quiet, isolated, get anxious easily, and are afraid of noisy places – but they have a wonderful gift and talent for painting. These kids are like far-off stars in the night sky: Bright, striking, but out of reach.

As a result, in 2017, Kids Design Glass has decided to devote more attention to these lovable kids. In collaboration with Qingcongquan Children’s Training Centre, we have been exhibiting the kids’ artworks. Their strokes seemingly skillful and confident, these fantastic, richly vibrant works are the product of days of effort and perseverance by the children, their parents, and those who love them. Dreams don’t distinguish between age and social group. No two leaves in the world are the same. Every child is a special gift bestowed by the heavens. We hope that more people will show concern for these lonesome little stars, helping them achieve the dreams and hopes for the future in their hearts.

Perhaps, every one of us is a lonely star that to find its own place in the vast galaxy. Yet, we also believe that each person is also a unique star that, with love and communication, will radiate its own special light.

Annealing 2017 Party

Annealing 2017 Party

March 04, 2017

Annealing is an essential part in creating glass art, and also, key to its final formation. The raw materials are burnt at over 1,000 °C until they turn into molten glass, ready for formation. Then the annealing process begins by heating the formed glass, and then keeping it warm, first slowly cooling it and then quickly cooling it. While slowing the speed of cooling, it can relieve the residual stress within the glass. Though controllable, it takes time to finish the process. But what is really fascinating is that it is the unknown and uncertainty in annealing that bring an unpredictable life to the glass artwork.

Every sparkle between modern artists and glass is a renewal of glass art. For Shanghai Museum of Glass, our role in this is to slow the cooling of the sparkle, and relieve the “internal stress” of modern art to its minimum for presenting the art itself in its best possible form. We sincerely hope that in each year’s exhibition, we could present our audience with artwork infused with feelings and emotions, not just cold materials merely cooled down sitting on the platform. “Annealing” not only can bring the best out of the materials, but also keep the art alive and lead an infinite life. This is also the “annealing” that will be constantly found in us.

Living Art Living Museum

2017年1月18日 / no comments
