对于Josiah的作品来说,玻璃占有非常重要的意义。当光线照射到表面时,玻璃会呈现出一种实际可感状态。但是当光线彻底穿透表面之时,玻璃却变得虚无。这样一种迷人的二元对立性可以从物质本身或是精神上去细细体味。

The use of Glass in Josiah’s work is important. Glass has a literal, tactile presence when light reflects off its surface. But when light passes through it completely, glass can signify an absence or even a void. This paradox can be understood both materially and metaphorically.

Josiah McElheny出生于波士顿马赛诸萨,现在工作生活在纽约。他曾获得罗德岛设计学院艺术学识学位,后来与世界知名玻璃艺术大师Ronald Wilkins, Jan-Erik Ritzman, Sven-Ake Caarlson与Lino Tagliapietra进行密切合作进行。在McElheny的作品中,他经常将照片、文字以及博物馆式陈列与手工制作的玻璃物件相结合,以期唤起观者对于意义和回忆的理解和思考。

Josiah McElheny was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1966, and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and apprenticed with master glassblowers Ronald Wilkins, Jan-Erik Ritzman, Sven-Ake Caarlson, and Lino Tagliapietra. McElheny creates finely crafted, handmade glass objects that he combines with photographs, text, and museological displays to evoke notions of meaning and memory.
