当刘沛莘与麦克·怀特在罗德岛设计学院的新生见面活动上初次相遇时，尽管他们来自截然不同的文化背景，但共同的兴趣爱好和价值观让他们迅速建立了深厚的友谊。在当今全球化的浪潮中，文化的交流与碰撞成为我们日常生活中的常态。在这样的背景下，刘沛莘与麦克·怀特开始了他们的创作，探索和展示不同文化间的相同与不同，试图通过艺术表达展现他们对全球化、多元文化以及个人身份认同的深刻反思。

在人类学中，“他者”的概念一直是研究跨文化交流的重要理论工具。法国哲学家伊曼纽尔·列维纳斯（Emmanuel Levinas）认为，“他者”不仅是一个外部的对象，更是我们自我认知的重要参照。在他者的视角下，我们不仅看见了对方的文化，也重新审视了自身的文化。这种自我与他者的互动，不仅揭示了文化的多样性，也凸显了文化身份的动态变化。

在此次展览中，对于“自我”与“他者”的观照贯穿其中。两位艺术家为观众创造了一幅踏上异国他乡旅程的个人心灵图景。这次旅程从机场出发，观众将经历艺术家们所描绘的出发、到达与居住，体会他们在陌生环境中的生活和心灵上的迷茫，寻找精神的“出口”。他们的作品通过细腻微妙的艺术语言，呈现了个体在跨文化交流中的内心世界。这些作品不仅展示两位艺术家在文化碰撞中的探索与体验，也反映了他们如何在这种互动中重新定义自我身份。

今天，全球化进程是否已经渐停了？这又是一个引发我们深思的问题。

每一个“我”都期望不同的文化中找到自己的位置，同时也通过这种多元文化的交织和互动，形成新的集体认同。

但又或许每一个“我”的集合，并不能真正成为“我们”。

When Peixin Liu and Mike White first met during the freshman orientation at the Rhode Island School of Design, despite their vastly different cultural backgrounds, their shared interests and values quickly forged a deep friendship. In today’s wave of globalization, cultural exchange and collision have become a daily norm. Against this backdrop, Peixin Liu and Mike White began their artistic collaboration, exploring and showcasing the similarities and differences between cultures, aiming to express their deep reflections on globalization, multiculturalism, and personal identity through art.

In this exhibition, the contemplation of “self” and “the Other” runs throughout. The two artists create a mental landscape of a journey into foreign lands for the audience. This journey begins at the airport, where visitors will experience the departure, arrival, and living depicted by the artists. Through subtle and nuanced artistic language, their works present the inner world of individuals in cross-cultural exchanges. Finally, take another look at the exhibition title, I (Plural).

Has the process of globalization come to a halt today? This is another thought-provoking question.

Every “Me” hopes to find its place in different cultures and, through the intertwining and interaction of these diverse cultures, form a new collective identity.

But perhaps, the assembly of every “Me” cannot truly become “us.”
