ABOUT EXHIBITION
The more complex the civilization, the more beautiful its décor. Since developing consciousness, humankind has continued to seek out the full range of mediums for decoration; from humble animal teeth and fruits of times past to luxurious gold, silver, jade and rare gemstones of more recent times.
Of these, Ancient Chinese Glass—as one of the first man-made glass composites in China, which developed separately from that of the west and whose inherent beauty is expressed mainly through jewelry—has left an indelible imprint on the history and development of ancient Chinese glassware
Ancient Chinese Jewelry, in its easy-going rhythmicity, dazzling brightness and inadvertently unique charm, mesmerizes men, women, young and old alike, though it carries a particularly strong power over young women, for whom a tiny glass coin, carved painstakingly by a skilled artisan, can bestow an aura of tremendous beauty—like vivid and lively dance moves—to a skirt as it sways back and forth
The Shanghai Museum of Glass has recently launched the Jewelry Pavillion as a forum for exhibiting China’s finest ancient glassware. It is centered on the fusion of ancient Chinese decorative function with modern sensibilities. It stresses the importance of ancient Chinese jewelry as something that transcends its own innate splendor, unraveling much deeper, spiritual connotations of culture, ideology, religion, wealth, authority, identity and status. The beautiful glassware of ancient times is once again displaying its magnificence at the Shanghai Museum of Glass in the form of ancient Chinese ear jewelry, taking us through history and detailing its gentleness and charm from the edge of the ear.
