ABOUT EXHIBITION
Pingpo Village, located in Bajiang Township, Xima Town, northeast corner of Longli County, Qiannan Prefecture, Guizhou Province. This village is the main settlement of “Xiaohua Miao”, a branch of Miao nationality. It belongs to the western dialect area of Luobei River region and has a long cultural history. It is in this village that Pingpo Miao painting was born. Pingpo Miao painting is a modern folk painting developed from the traditional batik and embroidery of Miao nationality, and has become popular since 1970s and 1980s.
Inspired by traditional customs and beliefs, Pingpo Miao paintings are full of beautiful and imaginative images. At the same time, they also pay attention to the changes around the people, depicting the daily life in a true and vivid manner. Interestingly, these paintings are mainly created by female painters, who are taught by the elderly with person examples and verbal instructions, thus Pingpo Miao paintings are learned and passed on.
