ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition Some Like Them Cold, is an attempt by the Shanghai Museum of Glass to curate an exhibition from its collection, covering a wide range of categories including glass art, design, painting and video. It is composed of three parts, starting from how artists translate other art genres with glass, following by taking glass as a cognitive medium, and finally settling down to display glass itself out of the art genre of studio glass. It starts from the versatility of glass and ends with its ubiquity.
The first part Translation is intended to show the variety of symbolic possibilities of the material. From Chinese landscapes to modernism, from special kiln casts of micro-transparency to utopias created by mirrored reflections, this part reflects how the same material presents different landscapes through the artist’s translation. The second section, Medium, discusses how glass as a medium transmits, stores and distorts people’s observations and perceptions of the world in an artistic context. Perhaps it is its ability to be completely colourless and transparent that allows it to achieve a subtle distortion of our gaze that seems real. The final section of the exhibition ventures beyond the realm of glass art, featuring glass from contemporary art, industrial history and even behind the scenes of past exhibitions. The paintings and video representations of this material provide a glimpse into the artist’s thinking about materiality. Meanwhile, the display of mass-produced historical glassware and glass pedestal from the museum’s past exhibition, which are not traditionally considered objects for collection and appreciation, is intended to question the criteria for judging value and meaning. Besides, the windows in the exhibition hall are also laminated with historical photographs of the glass factory period before the museum was renovated, to indicate that the possibilities of glass are far broader than those in the exhibition hall.
The title of the exhibition Some Like Them Cold comes from Ring Lardner’s short story of the same name. “But the time I like them is when they’re like you.” For a themed museum, no matter how glass, its protagonist, crosses border with technology, design and contemporary art in a closely connected but ever-changing manner, its materiality is the starting point and destination of exhibition, where the curation pathway begins and ends.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Shanghai Museum of Glass, we try to go back to the original material, to dissect the attached decorations and art, peel off the signs, symbols and concepts surrounding it, and represent its objective existence beyond pedestal and spotlights.
