Tacoma Mayor Visits the SHMOG
May 20, 2014
Tacoma, Washington is a port city at the southern end of the Puget Sound. Renowned for its exquisite glass art, Tacoma is considered the capital of glass art, and colorful glassworks can be found all over the city. Glass artist Dale Chihuly was born in Tacoma and is one of its most famous sons. In 2007, founder and CEO of the Shanghai Museum of Glass Art Mr. Zhang Lin visited the Tacoma Museum of Glass as part of preparations for his own museum. Following the visit, Mr. Zhang remained in contact with the Tacoma Museum of Glass and the two institutions have continued to work together. From this, a deep bond was formed between Tacoma City and the Shanghai Museum of Glass.
On May 20th 2014, Tacoma mayor Marilyn Strickland, director of Community and Economic Development Ricardo Noguera M.C.P. and senior business consultant Michael A. Fowler paid a visit to the Shanghai Museum of Glass. Let’s retrace Mayor Marilyn’s journey through the Shanghai Museum of Glass – one that was by turns wondrous, intimate and unexpectedly delightful!
The first stop on Marilyn’s visit was the DIY Creative Workshop exhibition room, located in a corner of the museum’s main hall. Stained glass, mosaics, melted glass… the visitors were able to peruse a rich array of highly creative, hand-made glass items and try their hand at making their own glass objects!
For most Westerners, words like eye beads, glass walls and glass ear pendants are unfamiliar yet intriguing terms. In the museum’s main exhibition area, Marilyn was fascinated by the history of glass in China.
In the hot glass performance area, an experienced craftsman was in the process of creating museum mascots Bobo and Lili. Our American guests were astonished by the skill of craftsman A Zuo, but it seemed that Mayor Marilyn was more interested in the small pieces A Zuo had already completed.
In the museum’s third exhibition area the guests found a mural with a number of secret doors hidden within in. The exhibition takes a lively and witty approach to showcasing the latest technical applications of glass, and Mayor Marilyn was clearly delighted by the mechanisms hidden within it.
After leaving the main building, Marilyn’s next stop was the DIY Creative Workshop, which is a favorite among younger visitors to the museum. Marilyn loved the workshop for its bright, cozy atmosphere, rich creativity, and because it was filled with the sound of children’s laughter. Mr. Zhang also provided a special introduction to the DIY Creative Workshop’s new miniature glass landscapes project.
The Shanghai Museum of Glass has spared no effort in creating a lifestyle full of culture and beautiful design. The museum has constantly created new exhibitions, leisure and shopping areas, glass artist workshops and areas where children can enjoy themselves and learn about glass. The museum coffee shop, mascot concept store, international creative design exhibition area, glaze gallery… Marilyn was bowled over by all the effort that has gone into bringing to life the museum’s philosophy of ‘sharing the limitless possibilities of glass’.
Another unexpected delight for Marilyn was meeting this 12-year old girl, who had been having fun with glass blowing in the Hot Glass workshop. Despite her young age, thanks to the tutelage of the hot glass craftsmen this little girl had already managed to make a large glass vase all by herself! And she wasn’t in the least bit shy when meeting these unexpected visitors: as she had fun with glass in the workshop, the little girl also boldly began talking with each of our American guests! What’s more, after Marilyn’s trip to the museum was over she bumped into the little girl again outside – and it is because of this chance encounter that we have the precious photos above!
So, has reading about the mayor of Tacoma’s visit left you eager to come and see the museum for the first time or pay us another visit? Furthermore – spoiler alert! – in the near future we’ll also be holding an enchanting joint exhibition with the Tacoma Glass Museum, a treat for everyone both old and young!
