2018 Annealing Project is Unveiled in Shanghai Museum of Glass

November 5,2018

Mirror Effect and Frontier, the individual exhibition of LIU Jianhua and SUN Xun opened on January 5th 2018 respectively. As the 2018 ANNEALING Project of Shanghai Museum of Glass, Lise LI, the project art director, invited artist LIU Jianhua and SUN Xun to create their latest artwork with the media of glass. The two exhibitions are presented in the renovated art space in the museum. The exhibition will last until May 31st 2019.

The press conference of 2018 ANNEALING Project was held in the Rainbow Chapel at Shanghai Museum of Glass, with the attendance of museum director ZHANG Lin, ANNEALING Project art director Lise LI and artists LIU Jianhua and SUN Xun. In the press conference, the museum director Zhang Lin stated that 2018 was the fifth year of the ANNEALING Project, thus he hoped the Project could cooperate with more contemporary artists, and the connection between glass and contemporary art would be continued, in order to present the infinite possibilities of glass to the public.

As the art director of ANNEALING Project, Lise LI introduced the origin and development of the project. LI stated that, as the curator, she would not set any regulations or boundaries to creation and she would encourage the artist to work boldly and freely with glass, an unfamiliar new material to the artists. In the exhibitions presented, both LIU Jianhua and SUN Xun are the first time to work with glass. Thus LI felt a strong subversive-ness in the process of curation and she had a high expectation on the coming part II of the unfinished exhibition Frontier.

LIU Jianhua mentioned that, in the one year since the beginning of the project, the creation process was full of confusing, difficulty and serendipity. Even though there are many common characters between ceramics and glass in materiality, he still experienced the sharp difference between the two materials, and the unfamiliarity and uncontrollability when work with glass is a special enjoyment to him.

SUN Xun expressed that, when Lise LI introduced the ANNEALING Project to him, he was deeply interested in this unique creation method. He wanted to reframe the core in his previous works through a completely unfamiliar material, glass. And this “dialogue” with glass brought many inspirations and challenges to him as well. When talking about the future expectations, SUN Xun expressed that he hoped the ANNEALING Project could insist its experimentalism and pure artistry.

LIU Jianhua chooses dark red and black glass as the material of three sets of works, Monument, Breathing Scenery and Black Body, which aims to break the existed understanding of glass. The half opened exhibition hall brings the out-window scenery into the gallery space, and when visitors step on the floor that full of broken glass, Mirror Effect would intrigue their sense and reflection in visual, acoustic, sense and mental level.

Frontier, the individual exhibition of SUN Xun locates on the ground floor of the contemporary art space in Shanghai Museum of Glass. It is the part I of the whole exhibition, including the manuscripts, drawings, and animated videos, showing artist’s threads of thoughts on the new project, and the part II will be unveiled in March 2019.

Thank the guests, artists and media friends for attending the opening of the ANNEALING Project, witnessed the Shanghai Museum of Glass taking the step into the field of contemporary art with  more diversified identity. The two exhibitions will open to the public until May 31st 2019.

On 9th October, 2018, the exhibition design of Shanghai Museum of Glass was awarded the ICONIC AWARDS, Innovative Architecture “Best of Best” project by Andrej Kupetz, the CEO of the Executive Board of the German Design Council in the Pinakothek der Moderne at Munich. Zhang Lin, the president of Shanghai Museum of Glass and Tilman Thürmer, the art director of Shanghai Museum of Glass received the accolades.

Established by the German Design Council, the ICONIC AWARDS is the first independent international architecture and design competition to take into account the interplay between the various disciplines. Awards are given to visionary buildings, innovative products and sustainable communication in all sectors of architecture, the construction and real estate business and the manufacturing industries.

The jury statement comments the exhibition design as below:

The Shanghai Museum of Glass is rightly regarded as one of China’s leading museums. We were particularly impressed by how the subject of glass is conveyed to visitors in an extremely artistic fashion that is also highly educational. Thus, glass is represented not only in all its facets, but also in its various states of aggregation – from quartz sand to melting, moulding and shards. This is accomplished using modern technology, hand in hand with the classic concept of the exhibit as a real, tangible object. The design of the individual areas is also handled extremely well, with the theme of light obviously playing at least as important a role as glass itself. An incredibly strong museum concept, which visibly draws on a creative investigation of theatrical elements.

BOBO & LILI School’s Summer Special Events 2018

2018年8月14日 / no comments

“BOBO & LILI School’s Summer Special Events” in Shanghai Museum of Glass

This year, Shanghai Museum of Glass planed “BOBO & LILI School’s Summer Special Events” for children. According to children of different age’s cognitive development level, the museum used “fairy tale” and “daily weaving” as the themes. Guided by the familiar things of the children, that made them to use multi-sensory to experience, observed and created their own works of art in the museum. At the same time, the diversified activities and the multi-sensory experience make children to establish different forms of connections with the works and stimulate the desire to learn actively under the premise without touching the works, reducing the strangeness and fear of art, and thus internalize the art into part of the life experience.

On the basis of Jean Piaget’s view, a child psychologist, “The real purpose of education is not to increase children’s knowledge, but to set up an environment full of wisdom and stimulation, so that children can explore and actively learn knowledge.” According to this idea, the summer special event was organized by the museum’s education commissioner to carry out four activities (four different content courses in one phase) in the museum. Not only in the form of interesting aspects to explore, but also used the partial photos of the work to find the works through actual observation in the exhibition. The teacher guides the concept of the work and the aesthetics of the craft, so that the children can understand the process of artistic creation and the meaning of the creation. The events also specially invited the picture book’s illustrator to guide the children to create their own story books.

Childhood is a crucial period for cultivating children’s important skills in learning, socializing, and cognition. During this period, imperceptibly influence the habit of visiting museums and slowing down to observe of art are also better guiding them to perceive development and resonate with art. The difference between museums and schools, and interest classes is that museums use “themes” instead of “disciplines” as a way of classifying and learning. So that children can experience and learn art more naturally. Other than this, the museum also gives children the opportunity to be close with the art. They use different ways to combine the multi-sensory experience to lead the child to further understand the art, and then integrate it into life experience through their actual creation.

Tisseron, a French scholar, thinks that “For the audience of children, the establishment of cognition of things depends not only on visual stimulation, but also through the participation of the body, the use of various senses, and direct contact with objects, to internalize objects into part of their own experience.” Therefore, we also hope that through the “BOBO & LILI School’s Summer Special Events”, children of different ages can mobilize their five senses at the Shanghai Museum of Glass and slow down to appreciate the art..

Opening of Exhibition BRKN and Seventh Anniversary of SHMOG

2018年6月24日 / no comments

 Breakthrough in BRKN

On June 23, 2018, the Shanghai Museum of Glass ushered in its seventh anniversary. The annual special exhibition “BRKN”as a birthday gift to the museum was also unveiled on the same day. Visitors from the arts, design, and cultural sectors at home and abroad have spent this extraordinary and unforgettable moment with the Shanghai Museum of Glass.

Since opened in 2011, the Shanghai Museum of Glass has continued to present high-quality glass art and design exhibitions to continuously consolidate and enhance its reputation and influence on museums, glass art and design sectors around the globe. However, glass, as a relative niche material, has always had a large limitation in its audience. Moreover, the internal glass art is still in the development stage. Thus, the power of social influence is not yet sufficient. However, in the face of the ever-changing society and the public demand, if we are unable to throw off the shackles of those limitations that we are facing and create something new that surprising people, we will be quickly forgotten and eliminated otherwise. Meanwhile, glass as a material with infinite possibilities, we definitely have further ways to explore and interpret it. Therefore, it is necessary for breaking through the limitations of thinking and daring to have a new trial, and “breaking” the existing isolation and limitations of glass.

Although“BRKN” as the new annual special exhibition by Shanghai Museum of Glass is classified as the third series of “Keep it Glassy”, in fact, as a design exhibition emphasizes on “concept”, ” BRKN” has far exceeded the scope of design exhibitions. Designing – whether it is to design a product, a set of logos, or a process, is designed to solve a specific problem or difficulty in real life. But the exhibition “BRKN” is more intended to answer and to solve some of the abstract and complex political, cultural and social issues or predicaments that tend to be more ambitious in the future.

At the same time, we also in the hope of sending a message to the outside world with great determination through this exhibition: The Shanghai Museum of Glass has not only been creating new things, but we will never satisfied with the past achievement. Furthermore, we all have the courage to make deeper innovations and whole replacements but not only the ostensibly change so as to break free from the museum itself and of the past.

The Solo Exhibition of Meng Du was opened at SHMOG

Here We See More Than One World

The Room, the first solo exhibition by Meng Du in China launched at Shanghai Museum of Glass

April 29, 2018

In the spring of 2018, the Shanghai Museum of Glass (SMG) is delighted to announce that The Room, the first solo exhibition by Meng Du in China, will be held from April 29 to Oct. 29, 2018. Since it’s opening seven years ago, SMG has been dedicated to supporting the growth of young Chinese glass artists. Young artists are encouraged to create their work in a bold and honest way, reflecting the spirituality of people today, while promoting the development of glass art in China. It is SMG’s hope that it presents a lens to observe the world allowing viewers to contemplate and give rise to insights after seeing the world in art.

The SMG supports the voice and expression of female artists at its public platform. The artist Meng Du is also the youngest artist that SMG has ever worked with. She described how she felt shortly after coming back to China from her study abroad as follows.

“I settled into an organized, slow-paced and simple life in the suburbs of the U.S. over the past several years. After I came back to China, I went through an uncomfortable transition before I adapted to this rapid developing information society. The visible or invisible boundaries are creating barriers around us, just like how our daily life is compartmentalized.”

The change in Meng’s trajectory of life made her consider what glass can express as an art medium and what the boundary of glass is. At this new stage of her life, Meng decided to explore the prevailing but invisible walls and barriers through the unique form of glass. In this exhibition, the artist Meng Du offers a dramatic interpretation of pervasive “limitations” and “boundaries” in her usual, although subtle and intuitive way. Walking through the exhibit, the viewers will experience the transient and translucent nature of glass while looking at the fantastical and strange scenes. Each scene reflects a different type of limitation. Rooms of various sizes and styles function as large installations and a stage. Viewers will have intimate contact with stories and emotions through sight, sound and touch.

Apart from the visible limitations posed by walls or cages, each of us experience invisible restrictions in the society. Just as Rousseau said, “Man is born free and everywhere he is in chains.” Conventions, rules, authorities, homesickness, nostalgia, and judgement from other people restrict us from true freedom. These restrictions are sometimes referred as the “comfort zone” that is hard to break away from. It is very unpleasant to attempt to break away from social norms.

As a storyteller using the tool of glass, Meng is always investigating daily fragmented information and visual languages, compiling and skillfully expressing them in an emotionally relatable way to others. Ideally, when viewers pause at her work, they can build a special connection with the object while having a speechless conversation. Perhaps, in front of the labyrinth of glass we can get in touch with the bottoms of our hearts and find meaning in a moment like this.

What can modern public museums, with a collective history of three centuries, do for the public to catch up with a too rapidly changing world? To meet the demand of the viewers and fulfill their professional responsibilities, contemporary museums are experimenting with education, promotion, and even entertainment as they perform their traditional roles in research, collection, and exhibition. No matter what changes or challenges the museums are facing in terms of their functions, they must serve as a foothold in enlightening and inspiring the public. The museums should plan their path by responding to social issues and cultural confusions today, relying on their unique characteristics and strengths. We hope that this refreshing exhibition can not only shed light onto the glass art exhibitions across China but also encourage our visitors to think and feel.
