When Glass Meets Contemporary Art

2016年8月17日 / no comments

Phase—Mother_Earth,_1968

2016 National Museum Day

2016年5月19日 / no comments

2016 National Museum Day

May 19, 2016

18th May 2016 was the 40th International Museum Day. This year, the theme is Museums and Cultural Landscapes.  Museums revolve around physical aspect (Geographic), social aspect (Communities) and various aspects (Nature, Cities and Villages). These aspects belong to and represent the environment at the same time. As defined by the Sienna Charter, cultural landscape means the country we live in, the unique nature, cultural background and the symbols represented by the landscape.

The Shanghai Glassware Factory was transformed into the Shanghai Museum of Glass. As the witness of the development of glass manufacturing business in Shanghai, the Shanghai Museum of Glass maintains the features of old industrial buildings. Combining old with new elements, the Shanghai Museum of Glass and G+PARK generate harmonious atmosphere as well as vitality.

The Shanghai Museum of Glass offered free admission to the public once again yesterday, which has been practiced for 5 years. There were 5000 visitors. We would like to thank every visitor for the understanding and cooperation, and show our gratitude to all the helpers.  On behalf of the Shanghai Museum of Glass, we hope that we can continue bringing surprises and aesthetic experiences to visitors.

Fifth Anniversary of SHMOG and Opening Ceremony of Design Wing

5TH Anniversary of Shanghai Museum of Glass and Grand Opening of Design New Wing

May 15, 2016

Adhering to the concept of “sharing the infinite possibilities of glass”, Shanghai Museum of Glass (SHMOG) is moving forward steadily in year 2016, making progress and gradually developing itself into an interactive, experience-focused, international as well as community-based museum. After 5 years’devotion and experience, Design New Wing is unveiled by SHMOG on May 15. The existing venue of Shanghai Museum of Glass focus in black tone and implicit immersive art atmosphere, while the new Design Wing is more open and sunnier, a creative but natural art stage. The two venues are like “night” and “day,” associated but alternative, closely linked by a glittering Golden Fire Bridge, bringing audiences excellent visual enjoyment and visiting experience.

As another permanent display venue for the Shanghai Museum of Glass, the Design Wing collects classic and pioneer works from numerous renowned designers home and abroad, in its nearly 2000-square-meter concise and fluent space, with a consistent aesthetic factors and display principles, as well as infinite passion towards glass. The nearly 40 different works from designers with different cultural backgrounds and education experiences, show out the characteristics of breadth and infinite possibilities of glass as material, but also reveal that contemporary glass design transcends the material itself, crossover with other materials and paying attention to current social issues and natural environment.

Besides wonderful design pieces, we prepared Kids Design Glass exhibition and special performance from Arribas artsits. Miguel Arribas made a fantasy glass castle for museum and the castle will be the permanent exhibit of SHMOG.

As the core of G+park, fully playing its three key functions of exhibition, collection and education, SHMOG makes effort to implement the social responsibility and offer public services, providing multi-facet and high-quality artistic experiences and aesthetic enjoyment to more city residents.

Well-known Czech glass brand Lasvit hold the Kura Appreciation cocktail party at Keep it Glassy exhibition hall of Shanghai Museum of Glass.

Among them are works created by Lasvit, a manufacturer of unique works of glass, including bespoke lighting installations, glass artworks, and award-winning collections. Acclaimed for their large-scale installations in hotels and luxury interiors, Lasvit is now focused on further developing their glass art projects with a line of work called Glass Couture.

The Glass Couture piece now on display in Keep it Glassy is a glass sculpture by Jakub Nepras, named Kura (Tree Bark). Nepras found his inspiration in the stream of information spreading with lightning speed throughout optical glass and projected it in an abstract animation. The light sculpture appears to be alive, natural, akin to the bark that is the soul of the tree. The seemingly levitating Kura seems to burst with sap and nutrients.

Libor Secka, the Czech Republic Ambassador, Leon Jakimic, Founder & President of Lasvit, Maxim Velcovsky, Art Director of Lasvit and Zhang Lin, Chairman and CEO of Shanghai Museum of Glass gave warm speech. All the distinguished audience gathering together to appreciate this breathtaking and crystal clear world created by Lasvit.

However visionary and technologically advanced these pieces are, they couldn’t have been created without the outstanding skills of Lasvit’s glassmakers. The company’s foundation lies in centuries of glassmaking tradition in Bohemia and generations of current Czech craftsmen. We have reason to believe that Shanghai Museum of Glass will have further collaboration with Lasvit, bring attractive international class glass design to China and let more Chinese visitors to enjoy these top-level luxuries.

The lecture was kicked off by Teacher Deng Bin, and he stated his connection with kintsukuroi and the handcrafts. Through the different cases that are repaired, the audience can sense the loneness of the technique. Teacher Yuhui first started from different repairing methods, and then introduced the related repairing knowledge through the known repairing case of Portland bottle. She displayed the whole process of repairing hairpins through detailed pictures and full explanation, publicizing the basic rules and thoughts of restoration of culture relics. Kintsukuroi is full of casual and natural art feelings, and restoration of culture relics is precise and method-oriented, but the two ways are different methods to repairing glass hairpins.

The two-hour lecture was rewarding for audience, and they asked questions after the lecture and interacted with each other actively. Let’s look forward to the next great activity.
