Sharing the Infinite Possibilities of Glass, Living the Museum Lifestyle
May 18, 2014
A museum can complete a city. For urban residents, visiting museums is both a way of delving into their city’s past as well as exploring the possibilities of the future. May 18, 2014 is World Museum Day, and on this precious day celebrated by museum lovers around the world, we will also be celebrating the 3rd anniversary of the Shanghai Museum of Glass. To mark this event, senior figures from the museum will be holding a press conference in which they look back on the achievements of the last three years, as well as at what’s in store for the future. Hailed as ‘one of China’s 3 must-see museums’ by CNNGO, the Shanghai Museum of Glass will soon complete several projects that are based around glass and represent brand new concepts for wedding and museum venues. They are the Fantasy Wedding Hall, Creative Marriage Garden, Ultra-Modern Crystal Chapel, and – in what is a first for China – the Kids Museum of Glass.
In 2009, founder, chairman and CEO of the Shanghai Museum of Glass Zhang Lin and his team invited two renowned German design companies to create a museum park with a post-industrial aesthetic, the first such venue of its kind in China. The result has made a significant contribution to promoting the museum lifestyle and broadening new concepts of what a museum can be. For Mr. Zhang, the ideal museum is a space in which urban residents can interact, experience and share. It shouldn’t just be a ‘cold’ institution whose traditional functions are research, exhibitions and education; rather, a museum should invite the participation of urban residents, and should be characterized by its close relationship with visitors. The social function of a museum should be reflected in the way it enhances urban residents’ sense of belonging. It should bring itself closer to the public, and the ultimate name should be to create a museum lifestyle.
Stage one of the Shanghai Museum of Glass Park began three years ago with the magnificent Shanghai Museum of Glass, whose focus on community and interactivity has allowed the public to experience the aesthetics and art of glass. The concept of the museum is sharing the infinite possibilities of glass, and it includes a DIY workshop incorporating experiences and interactivity, China’s first Hot Glass exhibition hall, an art-themed museum cafe, an international creative design exhibition area and a visitor’s shop selling specially-designed gifts. Thanks to these features, the museum is emerging as a new center for art and culture in North Shanghai, and has been embraced by both the Chinese and international lifestyle media as a new cultural landmark for the city. Visitors to the park have been increasing by over 50% annually, and this year we hope to welcome more than 150,000 visitors.
The Shanghai Museum of Glass has created an exquisite lifestyle filled with culture and design. This lifestyle has been extended to a number of other areas: in the museum’s glass art workshop, for example, ordinary members of the public have the same freedom to create, exchange ideas and attend lectures as international glass artists. Such a platform for artistic exchange has extended the museum lifestyle into the realm of art. Residents’ increasing expectations towards the museum has also led to the creation of the Museum Arts Club. As Shanghai continues to evolve as a city, the club is now not only a place for guests to relax and enjoy great food and drink, but also functions as a museum offering an alternative way to display artworks. This gorgeously-decorated, expansive exhibition space has a strong artistic feel, and contains a profusion of Chinese and foreign artworks. Almost every piece contains elements of classic designs by top international crystal brands, and the astute evocations throughout make the museum culture part of people’s leisure time.
The Shanghai Museum of Glass has never stopped promoting a community-based museum lifestyle. The Museum Park’s new ‘Living the museum lifestyle’ project, which is based on the concept of ‘sharing the limitless possibilities of glass’ is about to be opened to the public.
