“The Vanishing Artist”

December 31, 2019

Murder Mystery Game is an entertaining party game which combines role-playing and investigation. Based on the current exhibition, Shanghai Museum of Glass developed an original story – The Vanishing Artist. That was what happened on the Christmas Eve, December 24, 2019, in Shanghai Museum of Glass: the artist and her latest created work were disappeared, and visitors could help the Museum to find them……

Focused on the topic of “Museum”, we designed various characters, such as “Artists are Treasures – Museum Director”, “Indifferent – Photographer”, “Hearsay Master – Journalist”, etc. They waited at an authentic exhibition opening scene, played the roles of crime suspects and interacted with players. These Non-Player Characters were played by museum staffs from several departments, and scattered in different galleries in the Museum, to guide the players to visit the Maze, Exhibition BRKN and H18 Contemporary Art Hall.

Playing the role of “detective”, the players have to survey the “Crime scene”, unearth the information, collect the proof, suspect the motivation, and find out the truth behind the crime. In the dramatic story, players could go through the situation personally and experience the feeling of each character. In addition, in the process of visiting, players also have to observe and fathom out the correlated exhibits, wherein hide the clue and secret of characters. The playwright fuses the concept of “id, ego, superego” into the story, and the “detective” has to find out the “murderer” in three hours. This murder mystery game has attracted about 400 participants in total.

In the constructed atmosphere of murder mystery game, visitors have to change the traditional exhibition-seeing ways to follow the plot, which leads to a more interactive, entertaining and deep experience. As such, the participants of murder mystery games became the audience of the Museum, not only enlarging the target visitors but also stimulating the night economy. In future, Shanghai Museum of Glass will keep distilling the possibilities of re-interpretation and re-creation of the museum collection, to intrigue the reflection on social issue and humanity, and present the Museum to audience in various fandom groups in multiple ways.

Exhibition UN-GLASS opened in SHMOG

Exhibition UN-GLASS opened in SHMOG

December 19, 2019

On December 7, 2019, conceptual exhibition UN-GLASS was unveiled on Level 2, Design Wing. The exhibition is curated and designed by Tilman Thürmer, Design Director of Shanghai Museum of Glass.

Followed by the exhibition BRKN, Keep It Glassy 3 that probes the “broken” of glass, Keep It Glassy 4 “UN-GLASS” aims to present an exhibition that erases the existence of glass. Fourteen sets of exhibits both spectacle and interactive, invite the audience to immerse in a world “without glass”.

As Thürmer states in the preface, “The impact and meanings that glass brought to humans have stretched far beyond its materiality. Glass changes the way we see the world and ourselves. This unique vision that goes both inwards and outwards has motivated us to reflect on ourselves as well as inspired us to explore the uncharted territories.”

Since its establishment in 2011, Shanghai Museum of Glass has constantly dedicated for presenting the infinite possibilities of glass. This mind-open conceptual exhibition provides an opportunity to rediscover the ubiquity of glass in modern society. The exhibition will open until March 29, 2020.

SHMOG 2019:Christmas Choir under Glass Tree

December 18, 2019

In the arrival of Christmas 2019, Shanghai Museum of Glass has prepared a unique gift – a grand glass Christmas tree which made of 2504 pieces of glass wind chimes. It is named as The Tune of Rainbow, designed by the Let’s Talk Glass team and crafted by all staff of the Museum. “Rainbow” describes the pearl-like iridescent layer applied on glass; and “tune” stands for the harmonic movement which composed by 2504 pieces of glass wind chimes.

On December 7, Shanghai Museum of Glass was honoured to invite the Mei Lan Fang Choir, Dulwich College Shanghai, in the form of Museum-School cooperation. The children gathered under the glittering glass Christmas tree and sang season’s greetings for the visitors and passersby. After the performance, the little musicians visited Shanghai Museum of Glass together. The exhibition that combines knowledge and fun arouses the interest and love on glass; everyone re-discovered the charisma of glass therein.

Next day, the Museum hosted a small-scale lighting ceremony. Mulled wine and finger food was serviced and the coldness was driven by the hot drinks. The sweet sound of wind chimes hovered around the winter’s plaza.

When children’s voice enchanted the tree of Christmas, a series of Christmas celebrating activities organized by Shanghai Museum of Glass made its debut. When the glass Christmas tree was lit up row by row, we wish New Year’s dream and hope would be enlightened in everyone’s heart.

SHMOG X D&I: Expanding Narratives

2019年12月18日 / no comments

SHMOG X D&I:

Expanding Narratives

December 18, 2019

“Expanding Narratives” stems from an assignment undertaken by students in the Design History and Criticism course taught at Tongji University’s College of Design and Innovation by Prof. Aric Chen and Assistant Researcher Azinta Plantenga. The Design Director of Shanghai Museum of Glass Tilman Thürmer and curator Yichun Chen were invited to critique the students’ presentation.

On December 5, 2019, the outcome of the cooperative project was announced in the Museum. The students were each asked to choose one object on display at the Shanghai Museum of Glass, and place it within a different context by introducing two other objects from outside the museum in order to support their new narrative. After the address by Design Director and curator, students brought their presentation boards to the museum gallery. The results of this assignment, as both parties found inspiring, are presented next to the exhibits and the visitors could see an alternate interpretation. Through exercises such as this, students are equipped with an introductory knowledge of design history and theory as well as the critical thinking skills necessary to develop narratives, rethink narratives and situate design within broader socio–historical and contemporary phenomena.

Through this successful collaboration, the students’ fresh and critical thinking inspired by glass add another layer to the storytelling at the museum. “Expanding Narratives” not only builds awareness of the multiple ways in which objects and histories can be interpreted, but also encourages both students and visitors to think of their own alternate readings. The result of this project will be exhibited in the Shanghai Museum of Glass until March, 2020.

Opening of Annealing 2019

December 03, 2019

On November 3, 2019, Annealing 2019, the contemporary art project of Shanghai Museum of Glass was officially opened. The Museum was honoured to invite two artists, SUN Xun and Kelvin Kyung Kun PARK (Korea), to create under the mainline of glass. As a result, in the Contemporary Art Hall 18, two artists brought their solo exhibitions, Frontier Part II and Double Mirror respectively.

At 5 pm, the Artist Forum was held on the second floor of the newly renovated Murano Café & Restaurant. The Museum Director ZHANG Lin, the Art Project Director Lise LI, and the two artists in collaboration of Annealing 2019, SUN Xun and Kelvin Kyung Kun PARK attended the Artist Forum. Mr. ZHANG Lin mentioned that the fusion between glass, a usually mundane material, and contemporary art would be intriguing, and expressed his great expectations on the young Annealing Project. As Lise LI argued, the Annealing Project was not only a process of giving new concept on glass as a traditional material, but also breaking the boundary of contemporary art. SUN Xun noted that breaking the knowledge structure and experiential cognition, and blending one’s own ideas into glass creation is a process awkward yet interesting, a great challenge to artist’s mentality. Kelvin shared the anecdotes of cultural difference during the Annealing Project with the audience; therein glass has become the start point of a private perspective of looking into female characters.

In the evening, Shanghai Museum of Glass hosted the media, professional audience and art lovers to enjoy the opening, previewing the yearly Annealing Exhibition together. After the preview, the performance by sound artist WANG Changcun, musician pink; money and ollo-MAM brought the audience a lively after party until late night, and the opening ended successfully.

As a project applying the museum’s mission, Annealing aims to not only presenting object-focused and visually pleasant exhibitions but also bringing a thought-provoking and soul-touching experience to the public. Out of the comfortable zone and beyond the limits, Shanghai Museum of Glass will keep inviting more artists to plant vitality to artworks, and then to climb the highland of contemporary art.

Psychodrama “The Light of Broken Glass” Organized by Shanghai Museum of Glass

2019年8月23日 / no comments

Psychodrama “The Light of Broken Glass” Organized by Shanghai Museum of Glass

August 2, 2019

On August 2nd, Shanghai Museum of Glass organized a large scale impromptu psychodrama. The psychodrama was headed by Dr. LAI Nien-Hwa and filmed by Mao Sipian. Derived from the intrinsic character of glass, namely fragile and brittle, this art therapy discussed the frustration, failure and bitterness in human life, as well as the light and possibility hides in the broken.

In the night, under the guidance of specialists, almost one-hundred participants, as both audiences and performers, joined in this unique drama. When life experiences such as exhaustion, plight and fetters were put on the stage, the participants experienced their thoughts, feelings, dreams and social relationship again. Alongside with the plot developed, they could sense, release, perceive and share what they thought, executed and uttered.

The play was closely connected with the BRKN exhibition which opened in June 2018. Broken, an act that contains negative meaning, yet possess versatile connotation in various areas, has rich possibilities to be transformed into something positive orientated. Through the psychodrama, we analyzed and rethought the meaning of broken, and learnt to accept and embrace the light behind it.

Followed the idea of “never stop exploring”, besides implementing the basic duties of research, exhibition and education, Shanghai Museum of Glass will keep exploring new artistic event forms, to attract different visitors come to the museum and foster avant-garde aesthetic experience.

Shanghai Museum of Glass Jumped Out At Strawberry Music Festival

2019年8月21日 / no comments

Shanghai Museum of Glass Jumped Out At Strawberry Music Festival

April 28, 2019

Between April 26 and 28, Shanghai Museum of Glass popped in Strawberry Music Festival Shanghai Station. Designed by Jamie Hayon, museum collection Nuclear Pomegranate vase was exhibited in the festival, alongside with glass design products of “Let’s Talk Glass” studio.

In the three-day festival, the unique design of Nuclear Pomegranate vase from the “Crystal Candy” series attracted the notice of visitors and music enthusiasts, many of them stepped on the stage and took selfies with the glass art. The juxtaposition between tender white ceramic and bright ruby crystal glass formed sharp contrast, performing strong visual impact. Meanwhile, the avant-garde character of Nuclear Pomegranate that transcending the boundary between art and design is identical with the combination of “Museum” and “Musical Festival”. Constrained and locked in a fixed space, day after day, nothing would be decorated on art but dust. Pomegranate, signifying prosperity and aspiration, symbolizes the wish of Shanghai Museum of Glass that to find other ways to touch, sense and satisfy the need of young generation.

Through the bold cooperation of “Museum + Music Festival”, Shanghai Museum of Glass accomplished another self-breakthrough, to get rid of constrain of traditional exhibiting space as well as the inert exhibition form, and to find new target and audience of museum. In the future, Shanghai Museum of Glass will continue injecting aesthetic power to everyday mundane life, making museum a sort of lifestyle.

Shanghai Museum of Glass x Tecent Music Entertainment

A cross-border art exhibition

March 24, 2019

On March 24, the cross-border art exhibition Flowing made its debut at the Rainbow Chapel, Shanghai Museum of Glass Park. Exhibiting for three weeks, it was the first time that Shanghai Museum of Glass collaborated with Tecent Music Entertainment.

At the opening of exhibition, the famous figures from business, music and art, including ZHANG Lin, Director of Shanghai Museum of Glass, LI Kai, Copyright Commercial Director of Tecent Music Entertainment Group, Christopher Lang, General Manager of Greater China of DTS, PAN Yan, Secretary General of China Association of Performing Arts, and YUAN Ding, Chairman of RECO, gathered in the Rainbow Chapel and witnessed the collaborative fruit of glass art, traditional music and new technology.

“Fusion” is the theme of the exhibition. Through the interview with the musicians, artist WANG Qin derived inspiration from the six selected compositions of six different musicians, and transformed the abstract music spirit into solid glass sculptures. The sculptures are named after the compositions: Dawn Light by Yi ethnic singer Guba Ahsan, The Spoiled Child by Mongolian Band Rid, The Mountain People by Hui ethnic singer MAN Xinwei, At the Foot of Mount Fanjing by Miao ethnic singer LONG Pu and TIAN Yingchang, War Horse by Mongolian Band ZUL and Ezen Sang by Mongolian Band Suutan.

It is the people that are the core of music art. No matter as musicians, audiences or artists, the encounter and mingling of those from multiple areas and multiple communities would rejuvenate the minor ethnicity culture. This exhibition is not only a groundbreaking interpretation of traditional folk music, an innovation in inheriting heritage, but also an application on the idea of “sharing the infinite possibilities of glass”, which brings further culture dimension to glass art. In the future, Shanghai Museum of Glass will keep on diversified cooperation to empower glass art with impressive inspiration.
